EDUC 5033 Trends and Issues in Language and Literacy Education

This course introduces graduate students to current trends in language and literacy education, with a particular emphasis on the science of reading and what works in literacy instruction according to current research. Graduate students examine relevant trends and issues from multiple viewpoints, and discuss the ways these trends and issues affect and influence the teaching of language and literacy, educational policy, and student learning and achievement. Specific topics explored in this course will include central tenets of the science of reading to include phonics and phonological awareness, fluency, and text and vocabulary comprehension. Graduate students will investigate the critical importance of third-grade reading proficiency, and the effects on future student educational achievement. The Georgia K-12 English Language Arts (ELA) Standards will be utilized.
