SFTY 7900 Crisis Intervention

This course examines the critical role of crisis intervention within the criminal justice system. Students will explore crisis theory, concepts, interventions and strategies required for criminal justice first responders. The students will learn how to develop and implement organizational programs for crisis intervention including: recognition of threat levels, active listening, effective mediation strategies and negotiation strategies of mentally unstable persons. Students will learn the various types of crises: ranging from individual mental health emergencies to large-scale social unrest—and the strategies employed by law enforcement and other agencies to manage these situations effectively. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the psychological aspects of crisis, the legal frameworks governing responses, and the ethical considerations involved in crisis intervention.
